The Micron Foundation aims to provide a bridge that connects underserved communities to technological innovations. That’s why we were honored to receive the Humanitarian Spirit Award for Diversity and Equity from the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF). The award recognizes our partnership with NCCF to make our STEM Chip/Tech Camps available to students served by NCCF during the pandemic.
NCCF’s mission is to provide children and families in vulnerable, underserved communities with opportunities to grow and thrive. The Micron Foundation initially chose to help NCCF with COVID-19 relief funding to support its work with homeless children and their parents, survivors of domestic violence, impoverished families and abused and neglected adolescents.
As we got to know the organization, we realized many of the middle school students served by NCCF would enjoy attending our STEM summer camps. These camps give middle school students the chance to participate in science and engineering-based activities led by Micron team members. Students and teachers alike enjoy taking part in activities related to Micron’s memory and storage technology. Taking these camps virtual in the summers of 2020 and 2021 meant students around the country could attend, including students supported by NCCF.
Layla, an NCCF student who attended one of the camps, especially enjoyed working with microbit robots. “I was already interested in STEM, so it allowed me to experience what it would be like to have a job in that area,” she explained.
The Micron Foundation’s work with NCCF is another example of how Micron pursues our mission to use information to enrich life for all — from our customers to our communities to our society. We believe that innovations and technology can be a great equalizer.
STEM Opportunities For All
The success of our virtual STEM summer camps prompted Micron to take more of our STEM programs virtual in 2021 and beyond. “Students from all over the world need more opportunities to engage in STEM curricula, learn about technical careers and connect with companies like Micron,” said Cathy Ammirati, senior STEM partnerships program manager.
Besides our summer camps, upcoming virtual opportunities include:
- Careers in a High Tech World (Micron Job Shadow). High school students learn about careers at Micron, especially computing, semiconductor engineering and technician roles, by meeting in small groups with Micron team members in these positions.
- Girls Going Tech. Students who are female or gender nonconforming participate in career presentations from Micron team members and engage in interactive STEM activities.
- Women in Technical Careers Panel Discussions. Students anywhere can join these online question and answer sessions with women working at Micron.
