About the project

In 2022, Micron announced our historic investment plans to bring leading-edge memory manufacturing to Idaho.

The Department of Commerce awarded Micron up to $6.165B in direct funding under the CHIPS Act to support planned leading-edge memory manufacturing in Idaho and New York. The grants will support Micron’s plans to invest approximately $50 billion in gross capex for U.S. domestic leading-edge memory manufacturing through 2030. The CHIPS grants and additional state and local incentives will support the construction of one leading-edge memory manufacturing fab to be co-located with our existing leading-edge R&D facility in Boise, Idaho and the construction of two leading-edge memory fabs in Clay, New York. These planned investments represent the first step toward Micron’s vision of both a leading-edge R&D and manufacturing center in Boise and a four-fab manufacturing complex in Clay to be built over the next 20-plus years with potential investment totaling up to $125 billion.

Micron’s planned state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facilities are expected to create approximately 75,000 domestic jobs over the next 20-plus years and strengthen U.S. economic and national security, furthering American innovation and competition for years to come. In Idaho, this includes 2,000 Micron jobs, 4,500 construction jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs.

Micron initiated construction on its Boise fab in October of calendar year 2023, with meaningful DRAM output projected in 2027. The fab will be co-located with Micron’s world-class R&D center to enhance operational efficiency, accelerate technology deployment and improve time to market for leading-edge products.

Location

For decades, Micron’s Boise Campus has been a world-leading innovation center for memory and Research & Development (R&D). This long-established memory R&D Center of Excellence will be co-located with the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing, facilitating later-stage technology development activity to be done in close partnership with manufacturing.

Idaho Community Investment Framework

Micron understands that robust community investments are critical to building the diverse, highly skilled workforce of the future that can sustain leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing and U.S. technology leadership. In support of Micron’s Idaho expansion efforts, Micron has established the Idaho Community Investment Framework, which reflects the shared priorities Micron and its partners have identified to lead inclusive growth across the state. The Idaho Community Investment Framework was announced alongside the State of Idaho and the City of Boise, longtime advocates of state and local efforts to bolster the success of new manufacturing in Idaho.

The Community Investment Framework will guide Micron’s efforts to cultivate the talent pipeline and enrich the communities where its team members live and work by focusing on three key elements: building the workforce of the future, investing in STEM education for all and engaging with local communities. Micron plans to invest $75 million over the next 10 years toward the priorities formalized in the Framework.

Micron is working toward effective and creative workforce development solutions to make careers in the semiconductor industry accessible to all, particularly individuals in underrepresented and underserved communities, including rural communities. Among other efforts, we’ll prioritize workforce training partnerships, continue our longstanding efforts to expand inclusive hiring, explore options for improvements to transportation and housing in the Treasure Valley, and provide the option of onsite childcare for Boise team members.

STEM education in K-12 through post-secondary education, as well as training programs, are essential in creating a skilled talent pipeline to fuel U.S. workforce needs. Micron looks forward to investing in statewide education programs, from helping to develop semiconductor curriculum for high schoolers, to providing college students with experiential learning opportunities.

Micron is committed to working with our community partners to understand the impact the semiconductor manufacturing expansion will have on the surrounding community infrastructure and needed improvements. Micron will focus on economic development and continuing to provide community support through giving of charitable dollars and promoting volunteer opportunities.
