About the project

Micron’s domestic manufacturing investments will help ensure U.S. leadership in memory development and manufacturing, underpinning a national supply chain and R&D ecosystem.

In Virginia, Micron plans to expand and modernize its Manassas fab. This investment will onshore Micron’s 1-alpha DRAM node, reinforcing the company’s ongoing commitment to key sectors including industrial, automotive, defense and aerospace, and medical devices. These plans are expected to create an estimated 400 manufacturing jobs and up to 2,700 community jobs at the project’s peak.

Micron anticipates all of its U.S. investments will be eligible for the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit (AMIC), and the company has already secured support at the local, state and federal level. This includes up to $6.4 billion in CHIPS Act direct funding to support the construction of two Idaho fabs and two New York fabs, as well as the expansion and modernization of its Virginia facility. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Manassas and the General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission (MEI Commission) to secure the project for Virginia. Micron will be eligible to receive an MEI Commission-approved special appropriation of up to $70 million based on an investment.

Micron in Manassas, Virginia

Micron’s Manassas, Virginia facility is the country’s only fully owned 300mm fab, specializing in 300mm NAND, DRAM and NOR focused on automotive, industrial, networking and consumer markets — in fact, about half of the cars on the road today in the U.S. have a Micron chip made in Manassas.

Of total memory chips in the world, about 2% are manufactured in the U.S. — all at our Manassas, Virginia facility.

Micron’s Fab 6 in Manassas, Virginia employs 1,300 staff and 1,000 contractors. Of those employees, one in ten employees are veterans with plans to increase this number through strategic partnerships with organizations such as DoD SkillBridge to tap into the national database for those who have served in the military and need career transitions.

Additional veteran partnerships include Virginia Values Veterans, Virginia Chamber of Commerce HIRE VETS NOW and in-state military bases.

The Micron Technician Apprenticeship Program with Northern Virginia Community College — the first federally registered apprenticeship program — saw 31 students join the first cohort.

What the community is saying

“Micron’s expanded investment in Manassas is a major win for both our national security and Virginia’s economy. As the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory, Micron plays a critical role in strengthening our domestic semiconductor supply chain. This is exactly why I’ve been a champion for bringing advanced semiconductor manufacturing back to the United States—because it means more good-paying jobs for the Commonwealth and a more secure future for our country.”

Senator Mark Warner

“I’m thrilled Micron is expanding its investment in Manassas, creating more jobs in Virginia’s growing tech sector. I’ve been proud to pass bipartisan legislation in Congress to strengthen domestic manufacturing of chips, and I will keep working to ensure Virginia continues to lead in advanced manufacturing.”

Senator Tim Kaine

“I’m glad to see that the world’s leading-edge memory semiconductor company— that calls Virginia’s 10th District home —has secured an agreement with the Department of Commerce to modernize and expand its Manassas facility. Micron’s chips, made in Manassas, are already in half the cars on the road today and are essential to critical industries like AI, defense, and automotive. This investment strengthens our economy, our national security, and our leadership in advanced technology.”

Representative Suhas Subramanyam

“Micron’s expansion in Manassas is a testament to Virginia’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and our commitment to building a resilient, innovation-driven economy. This investment will create high-quality jobs, strengthen our national security, and ensure Virginia remains at the forefront of the semiconductor industry. I am grateful for the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Lutnick in advancing policies that support American semiconductor manufacturing.  We look forward to partnering in Micron’s next chapter of growth and continuing to showcase why Viriginia is America’s Top State for Business.”

Governor Glenn Youngkin

“It’s an exciting day for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States as Micron has doubled down on their investment in America, including modernizing and expanding their fabs right here in Virginia. I’m proud to have led the work on the MEI Committee and in the General Assembly to ensure that Micron can continue to bring this leading-edge memory technology to the Commonwealth—an investment that will result in thousands of good-paying jobs and strengthen our position in the global semiconductor industry.”

Senator Louise Lucas, President pro tempore of the Virginia Senate

“We’re glad to see Micron modernize and expand their investment in Manassas, Virginia—right here in my district. Today is a great day for the 20th District, the Commonwealth, and the United States as we take bold steps to ensure that American leadership in memory semiconductor technology remains strong and rooted right here at home.”

Virginia Delegate Michelle Maldonado

“Micron’s expansion in Manassas is more than an economic milestone—it’s a testament to the strength of our partnership and shared vision for the future. We are deeply grateful for Micron’s continued investment in our community, which brings not only innovation and opportunity, but also reaffirms Manassas as a hub for cutting-edge technology and long-term community benefit. This opportunity includes high-quality jobs and workforce development efforts that aim to serve local residents and strengthen the regional economy.”
