Doug's IT Tech Tip: Extracting the True Value of SSDs in the Big Data Ecosystem

Doug Rollins   |   November 10, 2014   |   Storage

My last tech tip, Hadoop + SSDs Don’t Create Great Value—Yet, generated quite a few discussions, which social media experts tell me is a good thing–and I agree. I think it’s important that we have honest conversations about all use cases for SSDs and Flash in the enterprise. This way, we can decide where SSDs are actually adding value and where work still needs to be done for that value to be truly recognized. That is why we’re known as a trusted advisor for our enterprise customers: We provide them with a “voice of reason” about where and how Flash is best used in the enterprise.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: Hadoop + SSDs Don’t Create Great Value—Yet

Doug Rollins   |   November 5, 2014   |   Storage

In my last IT Tech Tip blog, I discussed how raw performance is no way to measure value—both in the car industry or the IT industry—and I began to discuss the much-buzzed-about Hadoop and its use with solid state drives (SSDs). Keep in mind—I’m talking about Hadoop and its distributed file system (HDFS) —as we know them today.

First, consider that the size of the “chunk” that an HDFS reads is huge, and the reads tend to be sequential. So how do you get value using an SSD that is optimized for very small random accesses? Well to be blunt, you won’t if using an HDFS today.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: Raw Performance Is NO Way to Measure Value

Doug Rollins   |   November 3, 2014   |   Storage

Everybody loves fast, right? Instant noodles, instant cocoa, microwave popcorn—yeah, the faster, the better! So why, then, do I drive a Toyota Yaris and not some “fire-breathing monster” of a sports car? It’s simple. When I went car shopping for a new(er) commuter car, I looked at the overall value of the car rather than its absolute “0 to 60 to 0” (miles per hour) performance. The Yaris offered the best overall value: It’s big enough for my family, fast enough to keep pace on the freeway, easy enough to drive and park, cheap enough to buy and operate, and economical enough, with pretty good gas mileage.

Doug's IT Tech Tip: How to Interview an SSD Vendor for Your VDI Deployments

Doug Rollins   |   October 20, 2014   |   Storage

I’m the first to admit it: In the enterprise SSD world, I’m an ”insider”—and in this case, that’s not a bad thing. I work in Micron’s Storage Business Unit, specifically with enterprise SSDs. As an enterprise SSD insider, I wanted to pull back the covers a bit and take a frank look at what SSDs can (and can’t) do to help overcome the challenges faced by so many IT shops on a daily basis.

Is Your Hardware Trash Secure?

Jon Tanguy   |   October 15, 2014   |   Storage

Data security isn’t just about protecting the data you want to keep. Once you store anything, that hardware—and its retirement—becomes part of your data protection strategy. Believe it or not, tens of thousands of HDDs and SSDs are retired by corporations every day! These old drives cannot simply be thrown away. The data must be completely irretrievable before they’re thrown out, so that no one can rummage through the trash and find valuable data. With older technology l...

Do You Know Where Your Data Is?

Jon Tanguy   |   October 9, 2014   |   Storage

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month in the United States. There’s no argument that we need it—every week, stories emerge of new data hacks and identity thefts. Reading headlines can be overwhelming and demoralizing, but there are steps you can take to keep control of your personal data. Data security issues are probably most apparent when data is being transferred from one machine to another and into the cloud. But endpoint security is just as important. When I say ...

Certifiably Awesome: Our Enterprise SSD Receives Rave Reviews

We don’t like to brag about our products like they’re our children (well, no too often, anyway)—but we couldn’t help ourselves from sharing the recent recognition that our M500DC SATA solid state drive (SSD) has been receiving in the industry.

Q&A: Three Keys to Choosing the Right Server Flash

Corporate Communication   |   June 20, 2014   |   All Products

If your data center applications are struggling to keep pace with user demand, you may be looking to SSDs to close the gap.  While SSDs will generally offer a host of performance advantages over hard disk drives (‘HDDs’), not all SSDs are the same, and neither is the NAND flash inside them.

I recently did a webinar with Storage Switzerland’s Lead Analyst George Crump during which we discussed this very topic – how do we choose the ‘right’ solid state storage for data center applications?

Earlier this month, I attended the Freescale Technology Forum (FTF) at the Gaylord Conference Center in Dallas, TX. FTF is a unique networking and learning opportunity for embedded designers. Attendees gather in early April for Freescale president and CEO Gregg Lowe’s keynote address The “cherry on top” of this already information-rich conference came in the form of some pretty awesome &ldquo...
