TOKYO — May 12, 2020 — Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU), a global leader in memory and storage solutions, today announced an 11.4 million yen ($106,500) donation to assist children and families affected by the spread of COVID-19 in Japan. Through its employee gift-matching program, Micron matched the contributions of its local team members on a two-to-one basis to support charities Akai Hane Bokin (Central Community Chest of Japan) and Meals on Wheels Japan.

“We are applying the full strength and resources of Micron’s business to support our communities in the fight against COVID-19, while continuing to take proactive measures to protect the health and safety of our team,” said Rahil Hasan, vice president of Micron Memory Japan. “By matching the generous support of our team members, we aim to help those who are most in need, providing meals, food delivery and educational support.”

Akai Hane Bokin, or the Central Community Chest of Japan, is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in Japan, with over 70 years of history supporting vulnerable people in the community.

“Single-parent families and those facing socioeconomic hardship are some of the people most affected by school closings,” said Yumiko Akisada, department manager, Fundraising and Grant Making, Akai Hane Bokin. “Micron’s donation to our COVID-19 relief fund will enable us to reach smaller nonprofit organizations throughout Japan to provide food and study support for children.”

Meals on Wheels Japan was selected as Micron Foundation’s Charity of Choice for 2019. Meals on Wheels serves as a platform for food-related support organizations across the country, supplying food-delivery services for the elderly. It was also one of the first nonprofits to launch a program called Kids Café, which assists children affected by COVID-19-related school closures.

“Micron has been a supporter of our mission to provide resources to help the elderly and families with children in need of food and child care since 2019,” said Kakuji Hirano, general manager of Meals on Wheels Japan. “The recent school closures due to the spread of COVID-19 have limited children’s access to school lunches, causing much hardship, and we are grateful for Micron’s continued assistance to address the critical needs of those most vulnerable members of our community.”

In addition to the two-to-one employee-match program, Micron Memory Japan has also donated personal protective equipment to the Hiroshima Prefecture Infection Control Office for broader distribution to local medical institutions. Micron’s contribution of 10,000 surgical masks, 4,400 N95 masks and approximately 290 liters of sanitizer was acknowledged in a virtual online ceremony led by Goh Tanaka, director of Hiroshima Prefecture Health and Welfare Bureau, on April 16. He stated, “We are very thankful for Micron’s donations, which help medical facilities that are under extreme pressure and finding it especially challenging to secure personal protective equipment."

In further response, Micron has supported its own employee base by making a one-time assistance payment of 75,000 yen to eligible team members who represent 67% of its Japan workforce. Micron will also invest in an employee-supported fund for those facing financial hardship. This fund will provide grants of up to 535,000 yen ($5,000) to individual employees based on need.
