At Micron, we’ve been building secure SSDs, with hardware-based encryption, and leveraging well-recognized industry standards for the past several years. Just in the past several months, we’ve taken the next step and added government certifications in the form of the FIPS 140-2 Level 2 Validations for our enterprise SAS SSD, the S650DC (Cert #2667), as well as the client SATA SSD, the 1100 (Cert #2848).

Micron and HP have worked together to deliver notebooks which meet the strict security standards of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), without the performance penalty that is sometimes seen with software encryption.
The most obvious application for this level of security is in government agencies where data security is paramount. However, private industries that deal with privacy issues and strict government regulation can also take advantage a FIPS 140-2 SSD. The health care industry, as well as banking and finance, may find that the documented security features for these FIPS SSDs can help verify that their enterprise follows best-practices for data security, including hardware encryption of data-at-rest.
