Micron is dedicated to enriching our many site communities and during this past month, this was more than apparent through acts of generosity by Micron team members around the world.
Micron Security Team Ends Summit With Volunteer Event in Singapore
The Micron Global security team recently completed a weeklong summit in Singapore, bringing together security leads from Micron’s Asia and North America locations. As their team-building activity, and in the spirit of Micron giving back to the community, they organized a volunteer activity to be held at the conclusion of their week of business meetings. At each of Micron’s major campuses around the world, Micron team members vote on and select an annual Charity of Choice to support through donations and volunteerism. With this in mind, the team arranged to volunteer for the Micron Singapore charity of choice, TOUCH Community Services, on Friday, November 11.
The Micron team of 14 was pleased to be paired with TOUCH’s elderly programs to take a group of “frail and wheelchair-bound” seniors for a morning stroll along the Kallang Riverside, to breakfast at a coffee shop, then shopping at a local shopping market.. The multilingual nature of the Micron team came in handy with this group who spoke a variety of languages, including Malay, Mandarin, Haakien and English.
“The importance of this type of work in the community made this an easy choice for our team-building activity," said Joe Mueller, Micron corporate security director. "We had a great time assisting the elderly through the venues, and our engagement with the TOUCH team was a pleasure from start to finish."
TOUCH's mission is to establish and provide for the needy and disadvantaged in society an integrated network of community-based services that strengthens the family, believing that every individual is unique and capable of reaching his or her highest potential. TOUCH's range of services include child care available for needy and disabled children, a cyber wellness program for youth, adoption services, caregiver support, counseling and social support, home care and activity centers for the elderly, centers for the disabled, as well as support for patients with chronic illnesses.
Rake Up Boise
Idaho team members helped enrich and support their community through volunteering their time, energy, and resources to Rake Up Boise on Nov. 12.
For 30 years, Rake Up Boise has provided support to the elderly and disabled who are unable to carry out the annual fall chore of yard clean up and raking. Over the years, this has become one of the largest community events in the state.
Approximately 40 team members raked and bagged about 100 bags of leaves in the Boise Bench neighborhood. Not only did team members devote their Saturday to help, but many brought their families along as well.
“This has become a beloved volunteer activity for our team members and our community. The weather doesn’t always cooperate. Sometimes they are raking in the rain, other years removing snow to get to the leaves. Our 2016 team enjoyed a sunny fall morning,” said Kami Faylor, community relations manager. “The elderly of our community cannot do the work themselves, nor pay to have it done. Our team members happily provide this service for them.”
On Tuesday, Nov. 15 at The Idaho Foodbank Warehouse in Boise, Micron continued a 15-year tradition with a 2016 holiday donation totaling 912 turkeys and 324 hams.
Micron provides employees an annual holiday gift (choice of ham or turkey) in appreciation of their hard work throughout the year. Since 2001, many employees have chosen to donate their hams/turkeys to families through The Idaho Foodbank. This year’s donation brings the 15-year total to more than 23,000 turkeys and hams for Idaho families.
“Over the last 15 years ham and turkey donations to The Idaho Foodbank has become one of our team member’s greatest traditions,” said Dee Mooney, Executive Director of the Micron Foundation. “We are honored to continue our partnership with The Idaho Foodbank to help ensure that others in our community have the comfort of a holiday meal.”
This holiday season The Idaho Foodbank’s goal is to acquire and distribute food equivalent of nearly 2.5 million nutritious meals – to families in need across the state.
Micron Milpitas Builds Playhouses with Habitat for Humanity
On Nov. 18, the Micron Foundation and Micron Milpitas team members partnered with Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley and the San Jose Christmas in the Park program to support the community through a fun holiday competition. The Micron team of volunteers put their creativity to the test by competing against 20 other companies to build a life sized gingerbread playhouse from scratch. All of the playhouses are now on display in downtown San Jose for more than a million visitors to enjoy. The community will view the playhouses and vote for the “best” – with the winner being announced Christmas day. The winning company has the privilege of keeping the prestigious “Cocoa Cup” trophy after the holidays -- as well as bragging rights.
But the real winners are the families and non-profit agencies who will receive the playhouses at the conclusion of the event. All of the playhouses will be donated to community charities that serve children, or directly to families, through various service agencies.
Micron Foundation sponsored the build, Habitat for Humanity provided the tools, materials and training, and Milpitas team members assisted with hard work and imagination. The Micron team of 15 employees designed and built a “Trolls” themed house brimming with fun and creativity.
“I couldn't be prouder of our team,” said Kristine Ostgarden, HR business partner and team lead for the build. “Our creative minds came together nicely. Now we just hope it will do well in the competition and ultimately be enjoyed by the children who will play in it.”
