International experts came together at the first Automotive 2016 Conference in Turin, Italy, on July 4 - 5, 2016 at Polytechnic of Turin, Lingotto. AUTOMOTIVE 2016 Conference aims to become the forum for the European community to present and discuss the most recent scientific and technological research for the automotive industry, with particular emphasis towards applications and new trends.
According to Prof. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli from University of California Berkeley and Ing. P.Antonioli from General Motors presentation, the number of automobiles sold will be reduced. The next generation drivers no longer consider cars “status symbols” but instead devices to be rented, shared and changed depending different needs during the week (short distance trip using a connect car or luxury car for the weekend). This trend is going to dramatically reduce the amount of gasoline vehicles in favor of a large electric and connected cars. This will increase the importance on the data security. Protecting content between users sharing temporarily their account, preference and bookmarks in the connected cars. Another fundamental change will also be the transition from current ADAS system using sensor and camera, moving to the next generation using different radar types, adopting new unexpansive solutions like new CMOS Radar systems using 60GHz SoC system and having <2w dissipation.

Micron presented two sessions: the first by G.Scuro covering the how the memories evolved during the past 20 year in the automotive systems and the second session by F.Tiziani covering Automotive Memories Requirements in the “Components and Package” session.
Giorgio Scuro discussed interesting trend analysis on average memory content per vehicle and memory technology type highlight how historically automotive customers purchased legacy products and with the coming advancements automotive will drive technology development and what the key enablers technologies were in the past 20 years. Further he highlighted the importance of Security and Safety aspects in the Automotive systems especially in the challenges of future ADAS evolution. Finally he emphasized Micron’s commitment and dedicated strategy to address the automotive segment. Specific aspects of the strategy encompass from design to supply, such as automotive temperature grade support, longevity program, zero defect target approach, dedicated services such as automotive labs.
Federico Tiziani presented the new social and technology trends driving the Automotive Industry: green cars, mobility, smart cars and ADAS. He focused on automotive memories requirements for each of the Automotive electronics systems (IVI, Cluster, ADAS, Data Center and Powertrain). For example, the major aspects on each systems from the memories sides. IVI needs performing storage and LPDDR devices managing multithreading request from Navigation, Video, Games and Internet tasks and at the same time having a good stand-by power consumption to guarantee fast instant-on feature. The next integration between IVI and Cluster will require not only the mentioned characteristics but also higher temperature grate and fail safe mechanisms. ADAS system must to comply high temperature, safety and redundancy architectures. Powertrain will introduce new and complex algorithm thanks to the hybrid and electric engine and this will have an impact in the code size. Micron strategy key message on “safety first” was perfectly aligned with all other players’ view especially in the Autonomous Driving and Cluster System perspectives.
