How Do You Take Your VSAN?

It might not be as easy as placing an order at your nearest coffee shop, but the pervasiveness of virtualization in the data center is creating a multitude of different virtual storage area network (VSAN) options. It is probably easy to guess our flavor when it comes to VSAN—make it SOLID!

Virtualization, and the server consolidation it delivers, is consistently named as one of the top spending priorities for business IT decision makers. Micron is out to prove that virtualization architecture works best when it’s SOLID—more specifically, when it uses Micron solid state drives and DRAM.

Recently we demonstrated four Micron VSAN-optimized technology demos for different usage models, and the results were quite impressive:

  • All-SSD remote office/branch office (ROBO) VSAN platform—This ROBO-optimized VSAN configuration offers easy consolidation of diverse workloads, “single pane of glass” management (reducing support needs), and the ability to absorb additional demand peaks for a budget-friendly path to ROBO server consolidation and long-term operating expense (OpEX) reduction.
  • All-SSD VDI-optimized VSAN platform—There is a far better way to build a fast, responsive, easy-to-manage virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that reduces OpEX and scales easily and granularly: An all-SSD VSAN built from leading, workload-matched components.
  • All-SSD database VSAN platform—This database-optimized VSAN configuration offers excellent application-level performance with low, consistent latency across a variety of database types and workloads.
  • All-SSD large-scale VSAN platform—This tightly integrated, full-featured, consolidated VSAN platform enables and enhances agile IT analytics infrastructures with performance and simplicity for outstanding overall value.

The usage models may differ for each demo, but the results are clear: Using all-flash boosts performance and provides extremely low latency for all of the environments. VMware’s own Chief Technologist, Duncan Epping, took time to talk all-flash VSAN with Micron, and you can catch that interview here. In it, he discusses the performance benefits of an all-flash virtual array and how the “collaboration between companies like Micron and VMware is critical to the success of virtualization … increasing availability and reliability."
