SSDs are used in a variety of embedded applications, from aerospace solutions, heavy robotics, industrial automation, and surveillance equipment to external displays, remote communication installations, and medical equipment. For these applications, standard SSDs typically don’t meet temperature, endurance, and robustness (vibration) requirements, which is why Micron has released its industrial SSD—the M500IT.
The M500IT, Micron’s first drive in the industrial SSD family, meets these requirements.
- Temperature: In the semiconductor industry, IT usually refers to industrial temperature. With IT SSDs, this has not changed. Standard SSDs operate at 0°C to 70°C. In aerospace solutions or remote communication installations, temperature requirements are higher. IT SSDs operate at -40°C to 85°C. In addition to ensuring read, program, and erase operations throughout the larger operating temperature range, the M500IT ensures users can program at -40°C and read at 85°C (and vice versa), something not achievable by most SSDs.
- Endurance: With SSDs, endurance is measured by mean time to failure (MTTF). In many industrial applications, an SSD is in a remote location and not easily accessed, so SSD longevity is an important factor. Typical standard SSDs have an MTTF of 1.2 million hours, whereas IT SSDs meet a stricter quality standard for MTTF with 2 million hours.
- Vibration: From heavy machinery in factories to black boxes on trains, planes, and automobiles, SSDs need to withstand the high vibration of these environments. Standard SSDs support vibration rates of 3.13G @ 5-800Hz, whereas IT SSDs support 20G @ 7-2000Hz.
