Competing to Give Back

Micron’s Information Systems (IS) team monitors a variety of metrics for the company, but most don’t involve friendly competitions with apples or backpacks. This changed last month, when the IS team in Boise volunteered at the Idaho Foodbank and created a couple of contests to keep things exciting.

Split into two teams and covering two days, the Micron IS team worked alongside other local volunteers. During the first day, each team was asked to fill backpacks with food as part of the Foodbank’s Backpacks for Kids program. While the first team barely edged the second in speed with an average of 12 six-pound bags filled per minute, team two came through with a longer stretch of production and more than 1,000 pounds extra food bagged and ready to be shared. Two days later both teams combined to fill 800 bags of apples, which were distributed to 800 families in need throughout the region.

Below is a by-the-numbers look at the team’s contributions to the Idaho Foodbank and those it serves:

Backpack Program
Backpacks filled 1,995
Pounds of food processed 5,370
Children supported Approximately 1,700 (for a weekend)
Fresh Fruit Bags
Bags filled 800
Pounds of food processed 4,000
Children supported 800

At Micron, we take pride in improving the quality of life in the communities where we work and live and enjoy seeing our team members bring extra excitement to giving back.
