Micron's SSD Foray

Yesterday, four Micron executives were in San Francisco talking to a room full of financial analysts, media and industry analysts announcing its foray into the growing solid state drive market with its RealSSD  family of products. Moving the NAND-based storage architecture forward, the first of Micron’s solid state drives vary in density from 1 gigabyte (GB) to 64 GBs. The portfolio includes its RealSSD solid state drives, which are available in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch form factors, and 32 and 64 GB densities; a RealSSD Embedded USB used for low storage requirements; and the company gave a glimpse at the potential of NAND-based storage, introducing its RealSSD Module.

Dean Klein, vice president of Micron memory system development believes there’s strong opportunity for Micron in SSDs given its expertise in NAND. “We know how to manage NAND flash to work best with controllers, allowing us to develop an optimized SSD solution for every application,” said Klein. “This is a positive new direction for our NAND flash product line and an exciting opportunity to add value to SSD applications and return value to Micron and our shareholders.”

You can catch an archived audio webcast of the presentations announcing Micron’s RealSSD family of products, which is available in Micron’s Media Center. Stay tuned for some highlights and industry influencer perspectives to be posted here in the next few days …
