Last week, I had the great privilege of attending the World Economic Forum in Davos. It was Micron’s first time attending the forum, and I found the conversations, sessions and engagements very productive. I met with global business leaders to discuss broad economic, technology and societal developments and listened to talks from some of the world’s most inspiring thinkers.
The initiatives discussed covered a wide range, including: safeguarding the planet, addressing mental health, and finding paths to peace in war-torn countries. The economic and technology initiatives focused on the new role of data, and artificial intelligence especially. I found those AI sessions most intriguing. There are significant new opportunities ahead, but also challenges with reskilling and skill shortages as the data economy is realized and AI changes how work is done across every industry. These changes will come sooner rather than later.
Davos creates a strong sense of community and urgency; attendees are committed to address today’s challenges head-on, collaboratively, and thoughtfully. The best way to do this is through data. Not every problem has a technology solution, but every challenge can be better addressed through data. Today’s data collection and analysis capabilities can provide a better understanding of the nature of the problems ahead of us than ever before.
During my career I’ve seen memory technologies move from lab projects to consumer staples that changed how we interact with the world, creating more opportunities to connect across vast distances. The next decade will be filled with technologies that bring more clarity to the world immediately around us — better understanding for how traffic moves through our cities, better environmental information, and better health knowledge. The secret to making the most of these new breakthroughs will be understanding how we all work together to put them to the greatest use (and prevent misuse). Meeting as leaders is the first step to identify how we go about building a better world.
That is what we are looking to achieve by creating better solutions to move, access, and analyze the world’s information. Data holds the potential to transform economies, societies and companies, creating opportunity for a robust and thriving world. I am committed to making sure Micron’s technology expertise is applied to help create that vision.
