As the sustainability program manager for Micron, team members and citizens regularly ask me why Micron isn’t focused on using recyclables at each site, advocating for public transportation options, and installing wind or solar farms around the world?

I explain that Micron focuses its efforts on global ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues. By focusing on these high-level issues, we can essentially find the issues where we get our biggest bang for the buck in regard to sustainability impact and ethical influence. However, there are many ESG issues, so determining priorities can be challenging. Without priorities, we won’t be able to develop sustainability goals, measure success, or shape communications that create a more resilient and responsive Micron for our changing world.

Stakeholders play a vital role in shaping the direction of Micron’s sustainability program. Earlier this year Micron embarked on a materiality assessment, an exercise used by organizations to ensure the care-abouts of our customers, investors, team members, policymakers and communities are reflected in sustainability report content and the sustainability program’s goals.

During the materiality assessment, we posed two questions:

• What’s most important to Micron’s business?
• What’s most important to you?

Now what? The Micron Sustainability Council takes these priorities into consideration as they map out the goals they’ll focus on in FY19.
