Drive More From Your OLTP Systems

Last weekend we went car shopping. We are looking to retire a 17-year old, 250,000-mile mid-sized SUV. We are looking for something a bit newer with less miles. Something we could just hop into and take a road trip (as opposed to taking it to our mechanic to see if we could make it).

It isn’t just for me. It is going to be a family vehicle. A transport the kids, pack up for a road trip and seat everyone when the grandparents are in town vehicle. We’re looking for big enough, good fuel economy and lower miles on the vehicle. We are looking for value. Not fancy. Not fast. Not massive. Value. Last weekend’s fun relates to databases, tough workloads and storage choice (really, it does!).

Most of us in the storage industry know that the most expensive NVMe SSDs are amazingly fast, excelling with very tough workloads. But how far can cost-efficient SATA SSDs like the Micron 5200 series really drive critical SQL workloads? Pretty far. Can they really deliver value? Yes, they can.

Orders per minute, a good value measure

SSDs have become a mainstay of high-performance, low-latency IT systems, driving them farther and faster, processing more data and bringing more value with some of the toughest database workloads like OLTP.

Here’s a snapshot of data we measured in the lab. One server with a couple of storage configurations. On the top, eight 5200 drives. Below that, four of them (we included a legacy configuration – 16X 15K HDDs – for reference, that’s the one on the bottom). The picture below shows new orders per minutes (NOPM is a standard way to measure platform capability).

Pretty amazing, right? And keep in mind, these are simple SATA SSDs! Where could you use SATA SSDs today? How many of your systems support SATA right now?

Super high NOPM is great. But some time-sensitive applications need quick and consistent. The 5200 delivers here as well. Look below. Left side: response time; right side: consistency. Lower is better. Both low? That means consistently fast. That’s a good thing.

So? What’s my point?

Is this relevant to anyone or just an SSD promoter yakking about irrelevant stats and metrics? That’s a fair question. May be irrelevant to some, may be relevant to some. Are you hunting to affordably improve transaction density? Looking for a simple, familiar way to boost your results? Enterprise SATA SSDs like the Micron 5200 may be the ticket. They can enable massive transaction processing and fast, consistent response times.

That’s some goodness we can all appreciate (SSD promoter, user or anyone just kicking the proverbial tires).
