It’s Time for Flash

IBM recently announced two new all-flash enterprise storage solutions: the IBM FlashSystem V9000 and the IBM FlashSystem 900. Micron was invited to participate in a worldwide series of IBM events called “Flash realized: It’s about time,” which introduced their clients (end customers) to the IBM FlashSystem family. We kicked off the tour in San Jose, CA, and continued with subsequent events in Mexico City, Chicago, New York, Singapore, and Germany. The tour culminated last week at IBM Edge in Las Vegas.

Why was Micron asked to join IBM on this world tour? Because we’re the flash inside FlashSystem.

Micron has a deep collaboration with IBM, one that created a truly flash-optimized, all-flash array. With these types of appliances, a traditional supplier/system customer relationship simply would not work. IBM needed to understand the interworking of Micron’s flash, and Micron needed to understand IBM’s flash requirements from the system side. These needs spawned Micron’s high-speed, 20nm and 16nm FortisFlash NAND devices that enable customers to tailor the flash for their application usage conditions, without sacrificing performance or reliability.

I had the pleasure of presenting at several of these IBM events around the globe. As expected, there were some cultural differences and language barriers, but one thing was universal—the world is beginning to recognize it’s time for flash.

Flash-based enterprise storage solutions were originally being sold on total cost of ownership (TCO), but they are now at the point where acquisition cost is actually lower than some hard drive-based systems. With Micron’s recently announced 3D NAND technology, even more compelling enterprise solutions are on the horizon. It’s time for Micron Flash!
