The Workloads, They Are a-Changin’

Do you remember what “workload” meant back in the day? It was work assigned to us, often via printed request forms stacked in a physical inbox on our desks. Boy, have times changed! For most of us today, our workloads don’t develop in the form of paper requests—but through email and digital request forms. And we humans are not the only ones with workloads. Keeping true to 21st century prophecies, our machines have huge, critical workloads too.

Google’s dictionary definition of the term workload reflects this 21st century update: “The amount of work to be done by someone or something.” These days, that something for me revolves around storage.

While I still spend a lot of time talking about workloads today, I’m amazed at how dramatically Flash memory solutions have changed the broader storage conversation. I now use terms like hot (critical) data, warm (active) data, and cold (archive) data to talk about workloads.

Every day, I see the opportunities for companies to take advantage of Flash technology grow bigger and better. Flash is now used for building or streaming web applications, for collaborating via email or messaging, for warehousing big data, and for executing data analytics. Because of its increased performance, smaller footprint, and power savings, customers are finding out that Flash is an ideal solution for many common workloads.
