"The best advice that I can think of is to stick with it. The first year or two in college can be difficult, but once you get by them and into the 'interesting' classes, it gets a lot easier." Brendan, Test Engineer
What do you do in your position?
I am a test engineer. It is my job to test every single memory part that Micron makes by maintaining code and running the parts through a series of tests. Basically, we want to make sure that every part will work in a computer or other electronic device, so we run tests that work the part as if it were in a real computer.
How or why did you decide to enter a technical career?
I always enjoyed math and science. I got into computers and then had a teacher tell me that I should try engineering when I got older. I decided to do it, and I stuck with it.
What do you like about your job?
Give an example of an interesting project or opportunity.
I like the fact that I love to come to work every day. Probably the most interesting project that I have done is to notice something that is wrong with the memory part and then to evaluate the part until the problem is found. When it is found, it's great to see the fix made and the part run correctly.
What high school courses helped you prepare for your job or
college program?
All the classes that I was required to take in high school helped me prepare for college. For some reason, I don't think advanced PE helped much, but it was fun to take. I took classes like calculus, physics, and applied physics, and they really did help, especially preparing for this profession. Although I do wish that I had taken more business classes, so that I could understand that side of the job a little bit more.
What post-high school education did you pursue?
I got my degree in electrical engineering with a minor in Spanish. I am currently working towards an MBA in business administration as I greatly enjoy the business side of companies like Micron.
What advice would you give a student interested in pursuing a technical career?
The best advice that I can think of is to stick with it. The first year or two in college can be difficult, but once you get past them and into the "interesting" classes, it gets a lot easier.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy pretty much any kind of sports such as baseball, football, softball and basketball. I'm working on my golf game, as well. I also enjoy fantasy sports. I won my league in fantasy baseball three straight years, but that streak will not continue this year. Other than that, I like to collect sports memorabilia and watch movies.
