Comments: Employees on four shifts keep Micron’s manufacturing line running 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The employees on the outgoing shift have critical information to pass to the employees of the oncoming shift. Often, these two shifts have limited time to talk. To accommodate the time constraint, employees write “passdowns” which provide a convenient and consistent way to pass information from one production shift to the next.

Passdowns must be written in a clear and concise manner. Above all, the information contained in the passdown must be accurate. Typos, misspellings, or poorly-constructed sentences can cause the oncoming employees to make decisions that could damage valuable product. The author of the example E-mail uses formatting to help the reader find the needed information. Notice the bold typeface, indentation, bullets, tables, and color.
