E-Mail Mentoring Program Outline

Students will be introduced to women in technical careers through e-mail mentoring and job shadow opportunities.

Goals:

E-mail Mentoring Program

  • Interface with role models who apply math and science principles on the job.
  • Encourage students to continue their studies in math, science, and technology.
  • Expose participants to technical and non-traditional careers.
  • Improve participants e-mail communication and computer skills.

Program Components:

  • Student-mentor mixer at Micron (2 hour experience)
  • Six-week e-mail exchange
  • Micron site visit, job shadow, and activities (5 hour experience)

Participants:

  • Twenty women in technical careers at Micron (e-mail mentors)
  • Forty 8th grade female students in math and science classes
  • Six to ten school coordinators - at least one for each school participating

How to participate:

E-mail Mentoring Program
  • School coordinator contacts Micron's K-12 Programs to indicate interest in participating.
  • Participating schools are given a number of participant spots based on school enrollment.
  • School coordinators identify interested students.
  • Students complete application form and return to coordinator.
  • Students must have e-mail access in order to participate.
  • Parental approval is required for participation.

Ideas for recruiting students:

  • Network with the math and science teachers.
    • Visit classes to talk about the program with all female students.
    • Ask for name of interested students or those excelling in the class. Specifically invite those students to participate.
  • Ask students who have participated in the past to talk about the program in the classes.
  • Incorporate recruitment into career fair or career awareness activities occurring at the school.
  • Network with career class teachers.
  • Include information about the program in your school newsletter and student announcements.
