E-Mail Mentoring Expectations

Expectations of Student Participants:

E-mail Mentoring Program
  • Complete and submit the program application.
  • Complete the biographical sketch before the mixer.
  • Send the e-mail test run as assigned.
  • Actively participate in the student-mentor mixer and the site visit.
  • Exchange e-mails at least twice weekly with the mentor and teammate.
  • Participate in the team challenge by asking and answering the questions each week.
  • Carbon copy (cc) the school coordinator on all e-mails for the first two weeks of the e-mail exchange.
  • Follow Netiquette guidelines.
  • Help create the school team banner prior to the final site visit.
  • Send the mentor a thank you at the end of the program.

Expectations for Mentors:

E-mail Mentoring Program
  • Complete a biographical sketch to share with your student at the mixer.
  • Complete the “Who am I?” template for the student-mentor mixer.
  • Host your students for the Micron mixer and the final site visit.
  • Report any problems or concerns to the coordinating teacher and K-12 coordinator in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain an e-mail exchange at least twice weekly with your students for the six week period.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with your students. Encourage your students to do well in school.
  • Carbon copy (cc) the teacher coordinating the program for the first two weeks.
  • Maintain an electronic file of all e-mail communication.
  • Let your student know how math, science, computers, and technology are a part of your daily work.
  • Lead the team challenge.
  • Review corporate guidelines about internet and computer usage.
  • Review the mentor guidelines e-mailed to you.

Expectations of School Coordinator:

  • Attend the planning meeting.
  • Recruit and select students to participate.
  • Coordinate completion and collection of student applications.
  • Coordinate completion of the students' biographical sketches before the mixer. Each student will need to bring two copies with her.
  • Facilitate student e-mail test run.
  • Bring students to the student-mentor mixer.
  • Coordinate time for the students to e-mail twice a week.
  • Instruct students to carbon copy (cc) you on the first two weeks of e-mails to ensure regular communication is established.
  • Monitor student progress on the e-mail Team Challenge questions.
  • Communicate with students on a weekly basis about e-mail exchanges, progress, concerns, and questions.
  • Facilitate student meetings to create a school banner displaying key facts learned.
  • Report any problems to the appropriate mentor and cc the K-12 coordinator in a timely fashion.
  • Arrange for students' final site visit to Micron.
