Problem:

Estimate how much it will cost to build the doghouse shown. The doghouse is built with plywood fastened together with clips (part of the hardware) on a gravel pad. diagram

The table below lists the items to include in your cost estimate with some facts that will help you estimate the cost. You must estimate the amount of each item and calculate the cost, then total it all up. Assume the doghouse has a door as illustrated, and that you can sell back any material you do not use.

• Gravel weighs 120 pounds per cubic foot.
• One quart of paint will cover 100 square feet of plywood.
• Hardware costs 25% of the cost of the other materials.
• It will require two working days (8-hour days) to build.

Solution:

Plywood:     Gravel:
3' x 2' x 2 sides = 12 ft2
4' x 2' x 2 sides = 16 ft2
3' x 4' x 1 roof = 12 ft2

40 ft2
    3' x 4' x 0.5' = 6 ft3
6 ft3 x 120 lb/ft3 = 720 lb

Paint:     Labor:
40 ft2 100 ft2/qt = .4
.4 x 2 coats = 0.8 qts
    2 days at 8 hrs/day = 16 hrs
