A family wants to buy a barn to keep their animals in. The barn is 36 feet wide and 48 feet long. The foundation requirements call for concrete piers placed every 12 feet through the structure.

The piers are to be 2.5 feet deep and 12 inches in diameter. How much concrete will be used for this project?diagramdiagram

The final amount needs to be calculated in cubic yards because that is how concrete is sold.

Solution:

diagram 20 piers are required for the building. Calculate how much concrete is needed for each pier and multiply by 20.

area = pr2 = 3.14 x 6 x 6 = 113.04 square inches

2.5 feet = 30 inches
(113.04 sq in) x (30 in) = 3391.2 cubic inches

3391.2 cubic in

1,728
= 1.9625 cubic ft x 20 = 39.25 cubic feet

27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard

39.25

27
= 1.45 cubic yards of concrete needed
