CAREERS AND MATHEMATICS
Each student is to choose a career and write a two-page, typed, double-spaced, paper on that career. Your emphasis will be on how mathematics is used.
As you write, I want you to be specific. Don’t simply say that math is used. For example, one statement might be that fractions are used to measure the length of materials by a carpenter. Then you could go on to discuss what operations (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) they use, and why. As you write your paper, use as many examples as you can find. Also include the high school, college, and vocational math courses that you might have to take to be successful in that career.
A career can be covered only once by any class. If Sam writes a paper on a chemist, no one else can write about a chemist this year. It is to your advantage to choose your topics as soon as possible. There will be a sign up sheet in class.
You will also need to type a bibliography on a third sheet of paper showing all your sources of information. You must use at least one interview along with written sources.
Just prior to the end of the quarter, you will be required to give a short, 2 to 3 minute, oral presentation about the career you have chosen.
There will be a total of 150 points possible on this assignment. There will be 100 points possible on the paper and 50 points on the oral presentation. Needless to say this will have a substantial impact on your grade. Don’t take it lightly!
