Micron XTR NVMe™ SSD

The Micron XTR SSD delivers extreme endurance¹ to enable the reliable caching necessary for write-heavy workloads.

Extreme endurance

The Micron XTR SSD is engineered to deliver extreme levels of endurance for write-intensive workloads. The Micron XTR SSDvwas purpose-built for data centers that need an affordable alternative to the expensive storage class memory (SCM) SSDs,² for logging and read/write caching in tiered-storage environments. Micron XTR SSD provides 35% of typical SCM SSD’s endurance at 20% of its costs.³

The Micron XTR SSD provides exceptional affordability by delivering 20% more usable capacity per drive,⁴ by consuming up to 44% lower active power⁵ to help lower operating costs, and by significantly lowering the cost of the underlying media.⁶ With a vertically-integrated, industry-proven design, the Micron XTR SSD delivers similar real-world endurance and performance as SCM SSDs while improving supply fidelity. The result is a significantly better value.

Combining the Micron XTR SSD with the Micron 6500 ION SSD enables demanding, write-heavy workload tasks, like caching and continuous logging ― empowering them to easily withstand the most intense levels of write traffic.⁷

Benefits

Delivers extreme endurance

With endurance ratings of 35 RDWPD (random drive writes per day) and 60 SDWPD (sequential drive writes per day), the Micron XTR SSD is ideal for caching tiers, write buffering, logging, journaling, OLTP, and other write-intensive workloads. The Micron XTR SSD delivers up to 35% of the random DWPD endurance of SCM SSDs at 20% the cost.⁸

Optimally accelerates storage workloads with Micron 6500 ION SSD

The Micron XTR SSD delivers the same workload acceleration as an SCM SSD at a substantially lower cost. In a tiered Microsoft SQL Server analytics workload, Micron XTR paired with the Micron 6500 ION delivered nearly identical performance as an SCM SSD paired with the Micron 6500 ION.⁹

Incorporates Micron's industry-proven vertically integrated SSD technology

Designed with Micron’s proven vertically integrated storage architecture¹⁰, the Micron XTR SSD also features an industry leading security suite to instill confidence in data center deployments. These design features make it easy to tier with different product lines. Like its predecessors, the Micron XTR includes FIPS 140-3 L2 certifiability to help maximize security¹¹, along with TAA compliant SKUs for improved supply fidelity.

1. In this context, endurance refers to SSD rated endurance.

2. An example of the SCM class of SSDs is the Intel® Optane™ SSD. Intel® Optane™ are trademarks of Intel Corporation or its subsidiaries. The supplier has announced that it is discontinuing future development of this product. See https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000091826/memory-and-storage.html for additional details on Intel plans to cease future development.

3. Statement is based the $/GB list price of Intel Optane variants available on the open market compared to the $/GB of the equivalent Micron XTR as of the date this document’s publication. Unformatted. 1GB = 1 billion bytes.

4. Statements based on comparison of the usable capacity of the Intel Optane P5800X-1.6TB SSD to the usable capacity of the Micron XTR-1.92TB SSD.

5. Based on public power consumption data for the Intel Optane P5800X-1.6TB, P5810X-800GB, P5800X-800GB and P5800X-3.2TB SSDs.

6. Based on public pricing for the Intel Optane P5800x 1.6TB compared to NAND-based SSDs of similar capacity available at the time of this document’s publication. Unformatted. 1GB = 1 billion bytes. Formatted capacity is less.

7. Micron XTR performance and endurance rating exceed requirements for the tempdb storage volume in Microsoft SQL Server with standard analytics benchmarks, based on Micron Data Center Workload Engineering team research.
